Training
Safety on the water is an essential part of boating and as such we recommend anyone new to boating participates in an appropriate training course. Is it also important to note that a recognised training course is now a requirement for many insurers.
For those new to boating as well as experienced skippers, our RYA-recognised sea school partners offer a range of courses tailored to your requirements.
International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
Thinking of boating abroad? Many European countries and insurance companies now require the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) as a formal qualification for at least one person on board.
Helmsman Practical course
The Helmsman Practical course is an excellent course for those new to boating or even those more experienced boaters wishing to refresh their knowledge. This two-day course covers basic boat handling, helmsmanship, safety and basic engine maintenance. Its main aim is to teach boat handling & safety within a defined area. It is specific to the type of boat in which the course is carried out and is particularly well suited as an own-boat course for first-time boaters who are conscious of the difficulty and potential hazards of boat handling in the marina.
Level 2 Powerboat Handling
The level 2 Power Boat Handling course is an excellent introduction to the skills and background knowledge necessary to be a competent powerboat driver. This is also the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. The main aim is to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. this course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may also be conducted in a variety of boat types, including both planing and displacement. This course is particularly useful for those using open-powered craft such as RIBs and sports boats.
RYA Day Skipper Theory and Practical
The theory aspect of the RYA day skipper course offers a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, meteorology, navigation and the core basics of seamanship. This course can be obtained either online with our RYA-recognised sea school partners or in a classroom setting. The Practical aspect focuses on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. This course can also help you get the best from your modern electronic aids such as GPS and radar.
RYA YachtsMaster Coastal/Offshore
The RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is known globally and is often the goal of aspiring skippers. It is a well-known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper. Unlike other qualifications in the RYA cruising programme, there is no formal training course. Provided you have sufficient experience, certification and sea time (2,500 miles & 5 skipper passages over 60 miles), you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge.
There are however a number of RYA navigation courses that will help you prepare for your exam and many candidates choose to book with one of our partnered sea schools for bespoke training to prepare for the exam.
Radio DSC VHF
RYA Short Range Certificate is a qualification required by international law for anyone operating a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This very useful course can be undertaken either online or in a classroom with an instructor.
